Preliminary Screening

Six questions. No wrong answers, though some are easier to live with than others. It is not a filter — you can skip straight to the application and nobody will hold it against you.

It is eleven at night. He has begun explaining what a reverse proxy is. Ask a follow-up question. Genuinely. Let it run. The enthusiasm is the point, not the proxy. Ten more minutes, then bed. Nod. Scroll. He will not notice.

The cabinet door is open. Again. Close it. Say nothing. Every time, forever. Close it loudly enough to be a bit. Point at it until he closes it. This is genuinely a problem for me.

Sunday morning. There is a standing invitation to Mass. I'll come. It clearly matters to him. Sometimes yes, sometimes a lie-in. Not my thing, but it's his and that's fine. I would rather he did not go either.

He has made a dad joke. It is the third one today. Groan audibly. This is the correct response and he knows it. Return fire with a worse one. Actually laugh. Every time. Ask him to stop.

Friday night, nothing planned. My show. He said he would watch it and he will. His pick. I want to see what he loves. Neither. Talk until it is unreasonably late. Out. Staying in is a waste of a Friday.

Something in the house has started making a noise. He is already up. Follow him. This is going to be a story either way. Grab a towel on the way. You never know. Go back to sleep. He has got it. Assume the worst.
